When we opened The Berry Tea Shop in 2010, deciding to hand-blend our teas wasn't difficult. It was simply the only way we wanted to do it.
More than fifteen years later, that hasn't changed. Hand blending is still at the centre of everything we make, and it's worth explaining why.
What Hand Blending Means in Practice
Hand blending means working in small batches, by hand, with close attention to every ingredient that goes into a blend. There are no automated production lines here, no bulk mixing facilities. We make each blend to a standard we can stand behind.
The most immediate benefit is freshness. Mass-produced teas are often blended well in advance - sometimes months before they reach the shelf. Because we work in small runs, we make our teas closer to when you'll actually drink them. The difference in flavour and aroma is real and noticeable. A lot of teas on the market also contain "flavourings" which are sprayed on the leaves, and we are not into that!
It also means we maintain genuine quality control. If a botanical isn't meeting our standard, we don't use it. If a harvest comes in differently from last season, we can adjust the blend accordingly. That kind of responsiveness simply isn't possible at scale, and it's a key part of what makes hand-blended tea in Australia worth seeking out.
Why Berry, NSW
Berry is a good fit for what we do. It's a town that values quality, locality, and the kind of businesses that take their craft seriously. The South Coast pace of life suits a tea shop — people come here to slow down, and a well-made pot of tea fits naturally into that.
The town has also shaped our range over the years. The seasons here are distinct, our customers are engaged and curious, and being part of a close-knit community keeps us accountable to a standard that we're proud of. Berry, NSW isn't just our address — it's genuinely part of who we are as a business.
How Our Blends Differ from Mass-Produced Tea
The difference comes down to intention and process.
Every blend we develop starts with a clear purpose — what this tea should taste like, when to drink it and what experience it should deliver. We carefully source our base leaves and botanicals, choosing suppliers whose quality we can verify and whose values align with ours.
Because we're blending in-house, we know exactly what's in every batch. No fillers, no artificial flavours, no ambiguity. That transparency matters to us — and it's something artisan tea producers in Australia can offer in a way large-scale manufacturers simply can't.
